Announcement of the Cancellation of Young Neighbors in Action and Just5Days (February 22, 2021)
At the Center for Ministry Development, we take the trust placed in us by families, parishes, and schools very seriously. We made a commitment to provide programs this summer if we could do so safely. This week, CMD again consulted with Dr. Stephen Hawes, Epidemiologist for the University of Washington. Dr. Hawes recommended that we cancel the Young Neighbors in Action and Just5Day programs for summer 2021, because he does not foresee a way to provide these programs safely.
Even with the encouraging progress being made with vaccinations, there is not a way to proceed safely with residential programs with confidence. Overnight accommodations, group interactions, and in-person community service activities present particular challenges in preventing the potential spread of COVID-19. After reviewing this information, the Board of Directors and I came to the reluctant decision to cancel Young Neighbors in Action and Just5Days for summer 2021.
Young Neighbors in Action and Just5Days are essential for providing revenue for staff and operating expenses for CMD. This second year of cancellation for these programs is financially devastating to CMD. We will not be able to continue these programs in the future. We are working to find an organization that will continue YNIA and J5D and we will let you know if this option becomes available in the future.
We know that the witness of young disciples and the service to those in need are still vital in this moment. CMD is exploring ways to share resources with you to assist you in providing a service event in your community this summer. We will provide more information about these resources by April 1, 2021.
We know that this news is heartbreaking and disappointing. We were truly looking forward to providing programs this summer and being with young people and adults joined by faith in mission. We acknowledge and honor the grief that accompanies the evolution of these programs and the multitude of losses and adaptations so many have faced this year. We go forth in faith and hope that the mission and spirit of these efforts will continue in the lives of those young people and adults who participated and those who were served.
Know of our sincere appreciation for your support of CMD.
Peace and blessings,
